ASN Presidential Award

Posted on August 13, 2013 by Evan Economo

Our paper on the taxon cycle, which was published last year in The American Naturalist, won the 2013 Presidential Award from the American Society of Naturalists (ASN). It was a really nice and humbling surprise for us, and meant even more because it was chosen personally by ASN President Dolph Schluter.  Read more about it on the OIST website!

Benoit, Cong, and Benjamin in China!

Posted on June 7, 2013 by Evan Economo

Benoit, Cong, and Benjamin are in Xishuangbanna, China collecting ants in different habitats.  Sounds like they are having a good time and have already found a bunch of cool species.  I am extremely jealous.  More from them soon.

I am pleased to say OIBC is underway at Seaside house.  We’ve got an exciting lineup of speakers and a great group of students all to think and learn about “Big Data in Biology”.  Please check out the website and if you are in Okinawa, come to the lectures.

Why is our lab nicknamed “Arilab”?

Posted on May 14, 2013 by Evan Economo

The official names of our lab are a bit of a mouthful, so we started calling it “Arilab” for short.   “Ari” is a rough transliteration of the Japanese word for “ant” (蟻), so welcome to the 蟻 研究室 !
